The New Fruit For Me

Last Saturday, I went to St Lawrence market; unfortunately, I could not find any strange fruit,so I went to Loblaws market which is near my house and found a strange fruit named cucumis metuliferus. I was attracted by its curious appearance on which had horn-like spines. I picked one and spent 3.99 dollars. Surprisingly, the fruit was so rare that the cashier spent 10 minutes to confirm its name. I Googled it right away after I got home. Cucumis metuliferus is native to Sub-Saharan Africa and now grown in California, Mississippi, Chile, Australia and New Zealand; it is grown a temperature between 20°C and 35°C. Cucumis metuliferus has many different names such as horned melon, kiwano and African horned cucumber. And it’s an annual vine in the cucumbers and melon family, Cucurbitaceae.
I cut it in half then I saw the green flesh inside that looked like the cucumber’s. The taste was similar to tasting cucumbers but juicier and more smooth. I like it although it was so hard to chewing with the countless seeds in.
Afterwards I decided to make fruits smoothie. I prepared (3/4 Cucumis metuliferus, 1/4 green and red apple, 2 strawberries, 2 pieces of orange, 1/2 kiwi, a litter bit pomegranates & raspberries and 2 spoons honey and 200g yogurt) and blended them.
But sadly I found that I couldn’t feel the cucumis metuliferus in the smoothie. The taste of strawberry was too strong. It was yummy anyway. Perhaps next time I’ll try it without the strawberries. So compared to eating cucumis metuliferus directly, I believe making mixed fruit smoothie is a better choice.
